Ecstasy is your birthright. Now claim it.

Let ecstasy be your refuge. A tagline at the bottom of her email. Was this a quote? Did she make this up? I quickly Googled it to find the source. My search results flooded with party drugs and safe dosage info. No, not that ecstasy. The real one.

Let it be my refuge?

I read the email a few times and every time I got to the bottom I would blissfully flutter with a smile at that line. Never ceasing to delight. Let ecstasy be your refuge.

Side note the email came from the organizer of the 5 R weekend long heartbeat workshop, the one I was lead to by the grace of circumstance and the one I am on the dancefloor at right now if you are listening to this on Sunday. Rest assured I am sweaty and no doubt ecstatic.

A hiding place. Shelter or protection from danger or distress.

Can you think of a time when you have felt truly ecstatic?

Was it something you did or said that caused the eruption? Another person’s behavior? An image? A movement? A surprising siting?

The first definition: feeling or expressing overwhelming happiness or joyful excitement.

Yes. Often.

And the second.

Involving an experience of mystic self-transcendence

Absolutely. Countless times.

Perhaps it was a feeling of complete freedom, reckless abandon. Maybe peace, lightness, carefree. Maybe it felt like it rushed in but was fleeting. Maybe you rode the wave all the way into shore.

I saw a bumper sticker once that said: “ecstasy is your birthright” I was in California.

Ecstatic dance. Ecstatic birth. Ecstatic living. Ecstatic touch. Ecstatic tantra. Esctatic breathing.

That’s a shit ton of euphoria.

If this ecstatic transcendence is a natural right possessed by everyone then why aren’t we all in a perpetual state of orgasmic wonder?

Um, exhaustion?

Can you imagine if life was one big, never-ending, no water breaks, rhapsodic spasm? I mean, in some ways it is but oh my Goddess, get off me and let me up for air.

It’s a birthright not a constant. We are nomadic creatures going from one feeling and thought to another. Jetsetting, island hopping. The magic exists in knowing that ecstasy a destination we can frequent as often as we desire.

So how do we dip our toes in when we need to cool off? Shower in it when we are filth ridden with fear? Or even hide under it’s make-shift fort where no one can find us for a while?

“I will not be just a tourist in the world of images, just watching images passing by which I cannot live in, make love to, possess as permanent sources of joy and ecstasy.” Anais Nin

Which shifts my brain to another quote to live by “Don’t just stand there. Let’s get to it. Strike a pose. There’s nothing to it. Vogue” Madonna

Which of course leads me to…

If left untethered and untamed, Dance in all of it’s raw beauty is a fast track to ecstasy.

What if you can’t dance? Remember that you, in fact, can dance and get to it. Unbridled. Flowing. Calm. Chaotic. Just dance. Any pace. Any space. Anytime. Fall into the rhythm of your own ecstasy.

I have this theory that our body holds on to ecstasy for safe keeping and the most divine way to set it in motion is to have a dance party.

It can take some time to sink into the embrace of bliss so be sure to give yourself at least 10 – 30 minutes of practice each time. Be persistent in your pursuit but soft in your desperation and then as your heart begins to pump faster and your unique style of writhing activates flow you will be pulled over into the ecstatic abyss. You may have to wade through self-doubt, distraction, and lethargy but keep grooving. It is so worth it.

Sensual. Strong. Soothing. Soft. Messy. Loose. Rhythmic. Rapid. Flowing. Assertive. Composed. Whatever it’s essence be ever mindful to move through resistance. Move. Keep moving. Just move. The only way is through it.

Then sink into a moment or two of stillness. Feel the energy you have cultivated surging through your body. Allow yourself to hold that, sit with it, let it energize or calm you, infuse into everything you do throughout the day.

There it is. The refuge. In the dance.

Of course, there are other ways, I just can’t think of any right now as my thoughts draw me to a playlist I am very fond of and my soft yoga mat I rolled out on the floor before I recorded this. I am going to take refuge. Not because I need to run away from anything but because ecstasy is always a divine choice. I will check in with you next week.

Fierce clarity.  Wild creativity.  Spirited courage.

These three pursuits sometimes get me in trouble. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Are you with me?

Let’s do the deep work together. Let’s find focus in a world of distractions. Let’s make change. Let’s connect to our inner wisdom.

You will mostly find me activating people to drop from their head, down into their body. That is where the real wisdom is.

I made a commitment over a decade ago to awaken my deepest intelligence through creative movement and activated voice. Let’s dance. Let’s take up space together.
