This week let’s do a thought experiment. Kind of like a creative meditation.

First, a little story to set the scene…

Last week I went to a meet up hosted by Thinkific. It is the learning platform that we use to share all of our courses. If you have ever done one of my online courses on then you have been supported by Thinkific. The reason we chose those guys over a bunch of competitors is that they seemed the most authentic, run by real people who cared.

Meeting one of the company representatives at the meetup Sara, in Australia from head office in Canada, our theory was proven correct. We got to learn about the evolution of this start-up company and see how they really nurture and care for their customers and staff no matter how big they have grown. No this is not an ad for Thinkific.

We instantly got along really well with Sara from Thinkific and felt like we were catching up with an old friend. Lots in common and lots to chat about. I was surprised when she said to me, “We absolutely have to get a photo together, I want to show everyone that I met Deanne Love”

Me? Why would she want a photo with me? Other people in the company know who I am? I chuckled wondering if people at head office use me as an example of how you can absolutely teach anything online

“look there is even a chick doing hula hoop lessons. Anything goes”.

It made me really curious about what others were teaching. As I went around the table asking everyone there was a wide variety of responses. Law, makeup, sustainability, nutrition. Some sounded really confident in what they were doing and others seemed a little shaky or in start-up mode. I loved hearing about all of their online teaching stories.

As the meet up wrapped up I hung back and chatted to Sara a little longer. Fascinated in the psychology of online learning and the behaviors of teachers I had more questions. I mentioned to her that I was surprised that more people are not teaching online. I asked her what she thought the barrier was, as someone who helps to run one of the world’s largest learning management systems.

What she said next really surprised me.

What holds people back from sharing? I thought she would say barriers to entry like technology, not having the funds to buy a camera, having limited time.

She said the number one reason that people state they cannot teach online is “because I am not good enough”

What? It wasn’t camera equipment. Lighting knowledge. It wasn’t even content knowledge. It was self-doubt. Imposter syndrome. Who am I to stand up and teach? Who is going to listen to me? There are already others out there doing what I want to do.

The biggest chokehold on creativity and service. I am not good enough.

Ok here is the thought experiment.

I want to ask you some questions and I want you to write down the answers. Grab a pen.

If you are driving, cooking or doing something that requires focus and safety just keep the answers in your head.

Let me paint a picture for you. I am having a retreat, by the beach, you are invited, everyone is there to support you and hear you speak. You can speak about anything and I will erase your fear of public speaking (yes I have magical powers at this imaginary retreat) you are confident and adored. What would you stand up and speak about? Anything. Could be more than one thing. What would you share?

Now let’s imagine that everyone loves your presentation, of course, and they want you to spontaneously get up and chat about something else in your life, something else that you are good at, you enjoy or you do often. Maybe this is something they don’t really know about you, maybe you have some hidden talents or interests that you don’t often share but you know a lot about. What is it? What would you share?

The talks go really well and people suggest you should run your own retreat, one woman offers to organise the whole retreat and pay for it if you will come and speak for a week. 7 days of sharing something every day. With confidence, I erased your nerves remember. You speak freely and openly about a topic, others are interested in it and it helps them in their life. What do you speak about? It is something you know a lot about and so the content flow easily to you. What is it? Day 1 what are you talking about? Day 2? Could be the same topic with a different focus? Day 3? Day 4? What about day 5? On day six you could give a recap, what would you include? Day 7 is the celebration, what do you share? And how?

Someone at the retreat loves the way you share and how dedicated you are to offering up what you know. They invite you to use their studio to record a 10-day challenge. The topic is entirely up to you. Anything you choose will be useful and people will enjoy it, they will tell others how it has helped them and how much they love having you as a teacher. What is the topic of your 10-day challenge? Cooking? Massage? Sculpture? Holistic health? Face painting? Astrology? Mathematics? Decluttering? Nail art? How to make hula hoops? Easy ways to use Excel spreadsheets? How to do household chores with joy? What do you choose?

At any point, you have the option to say “I don’t know anything” “I have not learned any skills in this life” or “I don’t want to share what I know” they are totally valid responses.

A national morning show on the radio sees your 10-day challenge and they love it. They want you to come on their show once a week and speak about the topic you know most about. They will pay you $1000 per week for a 5-minute segment. You can talk about any subject you like. It can be a variety show or it can be the same topic every week. What do you talk about? What do you share?

With all this experience your confidence is sky high, you have proven to yourself that you can talk about anything you love and there will be others that enjoy it, need it and find it useful for their lives.

How does that feel to you?

Good enough?

Imagine if all of those people who think they aren’t good enough to share what they know most about suddenly flipped that thought and owned that they have the knowledge, creativity, and courage to share their genius with the world. Imagine how many more people would be living their purpose and helping others in the process. Now imagine the positive ripple effect of that.

The world is waiting for you. All you need is already inside of you.
